Wool Area Rugs
Or Synthetic Fiber Area Rugs?

For many hundreds of years, hand-made wool area rugs were made and used. The art was developed in Persia (Iran), Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and surrounding countries. Gradually, traders brought these beautiful pieces of art across ancient trading routes to Europe and later on to North America.

Wool versus Synthetic Materials

Wool is the benchmark against which all other fibers are compared. Wool is the most durable fiber provided it gets the proper rug care. Wool retains its original appearance better than any other yarn.

However, the colors of wool area rugs might fade and wool rugs are more susceptible to staining than synthetic area rugs. Acidic stains might cause the dyed colors to fade. Therefore accidental spills on wool rugs require immediate attention (before the stains have enough time to sink in and damage the appearance of the wool rug). First rub the spots softly with a paper towel or a cotton towel. Then, mix a drop of liquid soap into a glass of water and rub the spot gently with a wet sponge and the soap mixture and then rub gently with a dry towel.

Occasionally but not frequently, you’ll need to take the rug to a professional cleaner. With proper care wool rugs will last for a lifetime preserving their quality. Rugs made of synthetic fiber such as Olefin are less sensitive to color fade and stains, you’ll find a wider variety of synthetic rugs, they are cheaper than wool rugs and they can last many years. Synthetic fiber rugs present a good choice for anyone who is too busy to take care of wool rugs and who wants to get beautiful rugs at affordable prices.

Modern Wool Rugs

Contemporary styles and designs are different from the traditional styles of wool rugs, traditional design however still fit to modern interior design. A variety of shapes, sizes, colors and patterns are available to suit most family rooms and living rooms. They are mostly machine made rugs. Handmade rugs are available; the two most popular techniques are the hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs

For budget limited situation, such as short rentals or in case you want to change styles every now and then, you may consider the braided wool rugs
