The Shag Wool Rug and
Shag Area Rugs

The shag wool rug embodies the decoration benefits of shaggy rugs and the unique touch and feel of wool area rugs.

The Construct of Shag Area Rugs

Most rugs are manufactured by first looping the pile and trimming off the top edges afterward. In the shag area rugs manufacturing process the long edges are not trimmed. The result is a fluffy and a soft to touch top surface with that unique pleasant visual appearance. The modern shaggy rug evolved from an ancient Greek rug tradition. Back in the 5th century, Greek artists use to weave these rugs from strips of goats' furs. The modern Flokati rugs are a direct evolution of that old Greek craft. Hand-made wool flokati rugs are comparable in value to Persian rugs. The word flokati comes from the Greek language and the meaning of phlokate is peasant’s blanket.
The shag wool rug is very similar to the flokati area rug.
With the advent of modern rug manufacturing technology and with the increasing use of synthetic materials, beautiful shaggy rugs can be found at affordable prices.

Colors and Patterns of Shaggy Rugs

Because of the way shaggy rugs are manufactured, most shag area rugs are of one solid color or a blend of a few solid colors. The way the rug is constructed allows light to change the way the rug looks like depending on the aspect angle. Shaggy rugs use thick and dense shiny piles therefore they are both beautiful as well as cozy. If you still want to see a pattern, a new technique called funky shag rugs trim the pile shorter to allow for unique decorating patterns. Some rugs can be in light colors such as beige, ivory, white or gray. Other might be colored with rather bold colors such as blue, green, purple or red. Multi-color rugs create a very interesting effect.

Shaggy Rugs Decorating Tips

Shaggy rugs are many people dream. They fit elegantly to the living room, under the dining table, are beautiful for bedrooms. Loft spaces, teen rooms and student rooms can change their appearance by laying a shaggy area rug on the floor. Like all other solid color rugs, use shaggy rugs to calm down a very colorful room or to draw attention to a specific area in the room.

Shaggy Rugs Materials

The most popular shag rugs materials are cotton, synthetic yarn such as acrylic, polypropylene, or nylon or a blend of synthetic pile.
A shag wool rug shares the same qualities that other wool rugs present. Wool shag rugs are however more expensive than other shag area rugs. Wool has advantages, but you need to consider the drawbacks of the shag wool rug especially when it comes to cleaning and care.
